Dial Up Setup Instructions
This document is intended to help JC'S Interactive Systems users set up the Windows 95 Dial-up Networking. The instructions are basically the same for Windows98 although some screens may look slightly different. Parts I and II of these instructions will guide you through the configuration and setup of the Dial-up Networking software. Part III will explain the actual process of dialing and connecting.
Part I: Network Settings:
1. Open the Control Panel - You can find this in your ``My Computer" window, or by clicking on Start> Settings> Control Panel.
2. Open the Network configuration window. Do this by double-clicking on the Network icon.
3. Check the list of installed network components displayed. You will need two components: the ``Dial-up Adapter" and ``TCP/IP" . If it is listed more than once, the one we are concerned with should be listed as ``TCP/IP> Dial-up Adapter"). If your computer is not already hooked up to a network and you will not be using other dial-up services, you should remove any additional network components (such as ``Client for Microsoft Networks") by highlighting each one and clicking ``Remove". If the Network dialog box looks like what you see above, skip to step six.
4. If Dial-up Adapter is not listed, add it. Click ``Add". Select ``Adapter" and click ``Add". Find and highlight ``Microsoft" in the list of manufacturers on the left. Highlight ``Dial-up Adapter" on the right, and click ``OK".
5. If TCP/IP is not listed, add it. Click ``Add". Select ``Protocol" and click ``Add". Find and highlight ``Microsoft" in the list of manufacturers on the left. Highlight ``TCP/IP" on the right , and click ``OK".
6. Set the TCP/IP properties. In the Network Configuration
window, highlight ``TCP/IP" (or ``TCP/IP . Dial-up Adapter"
if listed) and click on ``Properties". There are six
tabs listed along tip of the window. Click on each tab to
set the corresponding properties: IP Address --- Select ``Obtain
an IP address automatically." WINS Configuration ---
Select ``Disable WINS Resolution". Gateway --- Remove
any installed gateways, and add ``207.105.189.10". (Enter
the number under ``New gateway" and click on ``Add".)
DNS Configuration --- Select ``Enable DNS". Host ---
Enter your user name here, all lower case. Domain --- Enter
``jcis.net" here, all lower case. DNS Server Search Order
--- Remove any existing numbers, and add the following two
numbers in this order: 207.105.189.10 --- 206.13.28.112 Domain
Suffix Search Order --- Add ``jcis.net", all lower case.
Check to make sure the DNS Configuration dialog box looks
exactly the same (except the host option) as what you see
below. Advanced --- You do not need to change anything here.
Bindings --- If any components are listed here, deselect them,
so that there is no check mark next to anything. Now click
on ``OK". If you deselect components in Bindings above,
you may see a message asking whether you want to select bindings
now. If this message appears, select ``NO".
(jccomp.com is the same as jcis.net)
7. Click on ``OK" in the network configuration window. Depending on what network components you added or what settings were changed, you may be prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskettes, and you may be prompted to restart your computer. You will need to restart your computer in order for these changes to take effect. Select ``Yes" when prompted.
