FTP Instructions
Publishing a Web Page to Your Personal Web Space on JCs
Interactive Systems Server
*Note: These instructions apply only to
personal web pages. If you have a domain hosted
on our server, i.e. www.yourdomain.com, contact us directly
for information pertaining to your web site. When you have
finished designing your personal web page and are ready to
publish it to the Internet, there are a few small details
to remember: 1. The first page that you want people to see
when they go to your web address needs to be saved as index.html.
Be careful to note that this is NOT the same as index.htm.
1. Your web address will be written in the following manner:
http://www.jcis.net/~<yourusername>' Always remember
that the tilde (~) is required before your login name in the
web address in order for the page to be called to the screen.
The tilde (~) can be written by holding shift and pressing
the key directly left of the 1 key in the upper
left corner of the keyboard.
2. If you wish to refer a person directly to a page within
your webspace without having them look at the initial page,
or having to follow any links to get there, give out the address
in the following way: http://www.jcis.net/~/ To
upload your page(s) to the www.jcis.net server, you have a
few options: a) You may use a Netscape
browser to connect and upload your file(s) b) You may
use Microsoft FrontPage98
to create your site and upload your files.
3. If you do NOT have a Netscape browser (Internet Explorer
does not function in a manner that will allow you to upload
files), or did not create your site with FrontPage, then you
need to obtain an FTP program. This can be done by going to
www.shareware.com
or www.download.com,
doing a search for FTP, and picking the program of your choice.
The information you need is:
Hostname (aka: Server Address) : www.jcis.net
Port: 21
Login Type: Normal
Username: (the user name you use to connect to the Internet)
Password: (the password you use to connect to the Internet)
Once you are connected, you will be placed directly into
your web space directory. With your FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Program, you may create sub directories, upload, rename, and
delete files from your webspace.
If you have any difficulties, please call technical support
at 425-7100.
