Answers to frequently asked e-mail questions: 1. Email is not secure.
Information in email is sent through many servers on the internet from
your computer to its final destination. Do not ever include any
personal information such as social security numbers, credit or bank
account numbers, or sensitive data. There are, however, ways of using
email encryption such as PGP/GnuPG.
2. The 'From' address of an email is easily faked. If you get an email from admin@yourbank.com
asking you for your account information, delete it. Banks and other
institutions never email asking for your information. If an email looks
suspicious, delete it.
3. Do not email large attachments. Most
email systems are built to handle attachments of up to about 2MB. Do
not attach and email large photos or other large documents. Even if
your email goes through, the receipient may not be able to receive your
large email because it may be above their inbox's allowed size. There
are many services such as yousendit.com and transferbigfiles.com to send large files.
4. Email attachments may contain viruses. If
you get an email from someone you do not know which has an attachment,
delete it. Viruses spread through email systems as attachments and
depend on users clicking the attachment to do their damage.
5. Links in emails can be faked. An
html email may have a link that says, 'Click here to login to your ebay
account' which could actually send you to another fake
destination. If the email looks suspicious, do not click any links
included.
